Causes of Asphalt Cracks

Asphalt cracks naturally develop due to exposure to outdoor elements and daily wear and tear. It is important to be mindful of the common causes of asphalt cracks, so you can best protect your parking lot or driveway.

Water & Moisture

The biggest cause of asphalt cracking is standing water and moisture. When water penetrates asphalt, it causes cracks and potholes, as well as erodes the foundation and subgrade.

UV Damage

The sun’s UV rays can degrade and deteriorate the top layer of your asphalt pavement. This can cause it to weaken, creating cracks in your asphalt.

Oil and Chemical Spills

Over time as vehicles drive atop your pavement, they release gas, oil, and other damaging chemicals. These harmful chemicals can weaken and degrade your asphalt, creating cracks and potholes.

Why Use Asphalt Crack Filler?

If left unfilled, cracks in your asphalt will widen and deepen over time. This leads to widespread cracking, potholes, sub-grade erosion, and pavement degradation. Simply put, without preventative maintenance, cracks will eventually ruin the quality and shorten the lifespan of your parking lot or driveway. The good news is that a crack filling treatment from NYS Enterprises is an easy, cost-effective way to seal cracks, prevent moisture penetration, and stop any damage from worsening.

Benefits of Asphalt Crack Filler

Cost-Effective

Investing in a routine cracking filling service is much more cost-effective than repaving or resurfacing your asphalt. By taking a preventative approach, you can extend the lifespan of your asphalt and avoid having to pay for more costly repairs down the line.

Prevents Further Damage

If asphalt cracks are left neglected, water and other outdoor elements will continue to penetrate, causing them to expand further. Crack filler seals up cracks, preventing water from entering and destabilizing the surface area.

Quick to Fill

Asphalt filling is a relatively simple and quick process. You can very easily fill small cracks and potholes without repaving or replacing entire asphalt sections. This allows for smoother business operations and fewer disruptions in your day-to-day life.

Our Asphalt Filling Process

At NYS Enterprises in Seattle, we have a seamless three-step asphalt crack filling process.

1

Inspection

We recommend checking your parking lot or driveway for new cracks every 6 months. This helps to uncover small cracks that can be quickly filled before they become too deep or wide. NYS Enterprises is happy to provide asphalt inspection services as part of our routine maintenance plans.
2

Cleaning

Our in-house paving contractors thoroughly clean all cracks in your asphalt before applying the crack filler treatment.
3

Crack Filling

We fill all cracks 1/8″ or wider using a hot rubberized material and a squeegee. This crack-sealing treatment prevents cracks from worsening by keeping out moisture, weeds, soil, and other outdoor elements.

Protect Your Asphalt Parking Lot or Driveway With Routine Crack Filling

To ensure optimal longevity and durability, your asphalt pavement should be checked for cracks every six months. The reason is that even seemingly harmless hairline cracks left overlooked can continue to expand, creating extensive cracking and deep-seated potholes. By sealing up cracks with crack filler right away, you can save yourself the hassle and frustration of having to deal with costly repairs and hazardous damages in the future. Cracking filling also helps to extend the overall lifespan of your parking lot or driveway, saving you money in the long run.

Crack Filling FAQs

How often should asphalt cracks be filled?

Ideally, you should inspect your asphalt every six months for cracks and have them filled if necessary. On average, at NYS Enterprises, we recommend filling cracks at least once a year. Our expert NYS paving contractors will advise you on the best course of action during your inspection.

What time of the year should asphalt cracks be filled?

The best time to fill asphalt cracks is in the spring and summer (April – October). This is because it is hard to apply the sealant when the asphalt surface is wet or covered in water. The filler material also dries quicker in warmer temperatures.

What types of asphalt cracks can be filled?

Only straight line cracks can be filled with asphalt filler. This includes edge cracks, slippage cracks, and transverse cracks. Unfortunately, alligator cracks require more than a filler treatment to be sealed. Luckily, NYS Enterprises can help you find a permanent solution for alligator cracking, so don’t hesitate to contact us today!

How long does asphalt filler take to dry?

On average, asphalt filler takes 30 minutes to an hour to dry. However, it does take 1-3 days for it to properly cure. Keep in mind that this will also depend on your location’s temperature and how widespread your cracking is.
